AUSTRALIA 1 JUNE, 2020: Human-centred design is used in ISO standards as an approach to problem-solving. It is commonly used in design and management frameworks to help develop solutions to problems, by involving the human perspective in all steps of the problem-solving process.
In the modern digital economy, “design” is the latest buzzword. Clients everywhere are looking for creative thinkers capable of transforming their businesses through imaginative interfaces and beautiful user experiences.
The skills of a human-centred designer, also known as UX/UI design, is in high demand across all industries in Australia as companies pivot their internal focus to customers, in a bid to deliver successful digital products that are built on great user experiences.
One of ECC’s team of in house human-centred designers Ieva Janusauskaite talks about how her skills and techniques have expanded as she develops smart digital interfaces that are useful, desirable and seamless.
Putting the Human back into the Design Process
Creativity, coupled with the ability to use both the left and right sides of your brain certainly helps in UX/UI.
As someone who is analytical, I often find the constant need to ask “why” and so coupled with my graphic design skills, my ability to scope out and simplify a client’s digital journey and help the way they transact or interact, really complements this role.
An important aspect of designing products is knowing your user (personas). For designers, developing this skill is a critical part of the job. It requires an understanding of design thinking and user research. Until you know your user personas and their needs, emotions, feelings, and pain points, you won’t be able to deliver a great user experience.
Working collaboratively with people from very different backgrounds is key. From co-designing, through to concept collaboration and delivery, UX/UI works with clients, customer testing users through to highly technical teams and visionaries. It’s a great experience and you often find some really innovative solutions.
The UX/UI industry is continuously evolving and there’s always so much to learn. Communications have to adapt to convey design decisions. Using compelling mediums such as wireframing and storyboards really helps to take people step-by-step on a journey that opens the new conversation and facilitates more engaged feedback.
The analytical side of this role is important. Every UX/UI approach must incorporate user research and methodologies to understand design needs while keeping brand and continuity in mind.
An end goal delivered for the Victorian State Government Agency helped improve the customer and staff journey on mandatory food regulation digital reform.
My role here was to visually translate the digital functional requirements of food inspection processes, through to food business compliance generated ideas into a tangible design journey. See what you think of product shots below.
